Inside Neil Perry’s Newest Sydney Restaurant – Margaret

One of the many good things to open after the pandemic was Margaret, Neil Perry’s new Sydney restaurant. Based in the outer-city suburb of Double Bay, Neil Perry’s restaurant pays homage to his late mother by dedicating his new Sydney restaurant to her. As the new space became the first restaurant to be completely owned by the Perry family, his mother is honoured through organic material, colour and textural choices. Furthermore, Neil Perry and the staff of Margaret endeavour to provide customers with a special experience that brings his mother’s name to life every day. After taking over the space, Neil Perry turned his sight towards providing customers and staff with a restaurant that functions with simplicity and ease. To do this, he worked with ACME and Caon Design Office to create a space that warmly greets customers and surrounds them with thoughtfully chosen materials. From the entrance, the Thoughtful details of the design of the space are immediately experienced as customers walk through the outdoor terrace and to the front desk that is finished with custom Vanity 1200 rugs from Fyber. Behind the desk, customers are shown through to the dining area, which is also complemented by the same custom carpet. Additionally, the bar has been placed on the right side of the space and the kitchen remains open for display. Tasked with creating a space for guests and staff, ACME and Caon Design Office collaborate to craft a restaurant that the staff can efficiently work in whilst the customers enjoy a seamless dining experience. To answer this need, the paths within the Sydney restaurant are finished with tiles and the main seating area features Fyber’s custom carpet, which boasts acoustic properties for noise control. Furthermore, Margaret hosts a private dining room at the rear, allowing guests to enjoy a private function. Prioritising a range of fresh produce, outstanding service and a craft for cooking, Margaret is a creation of not only superior hospitality but a place for memorable moments. Throughout the design process, Neil Perry, ACME and Caon Design Office have thoroughly considered the materials used and placed a focus on two leading characteristics: durability and comfort. Additionally, the designers engaged Fyber to help with the carpet’s colour palette so that the Sydney restaurant was organic in spirit. Through a strong and trusted working relationship, Fyber, ACME and Caon Design Office have brought together textures and colours so that Margaret becomes a poetic journey that allows guests to sit back and enjoy their surrounds. As an expression of Neil Perry’s career over the last 45 years, Margaret ensures a comfortable, lavish and enriching experience. 00:00 - Intro to Neil Perry’s Newest Sydney Restaurant 00:43 - The Prime Location 01:29 - A Walkthrough of the Beautiful Restaurant 02:35 - The Two Types of People in the Restaurant 02:49 - Durable and Comfortable Materials 03:49 - Paying Homage to Neil Perry’s Mother For more from The Local Project: Instagram – Website – Print Publication – Hardcover Book – The Local Project Marketplace – To subscribe to The Local Project’s Tri-Annual Print Publication see here – Photography by Joanne Ly.
