STAR TRACK #6 / Nichelle Nichols played Lieutenant Uhura in the original Star Trek television series. Nichols was an American actress, singer, and dancer whose portrayal of Uhura was groundbreaking for African-American actresses on American television. Nichols was among the first Black women featured in a major television series. Her role as Lt. Nyota Uhura was groundbreaking. Uhura comes from Uhuru, the Swahili word for “freedom.“ Nichols was born on December 28, 1932, in Robbins, Illinois, near Chicago. She died on July 30, 2022. Star Trek was an American television science-fiction series that ran on NBC for only three seasons (1966–69) but became one of the most popular brands in the American entertainment industry.
