Star Wars vs. Hidden Fortress Mashup

Star Wars was inspired by the samurai movie Hidden Fortress by Akira Kurosawa. Edited by Eugene Baldovino for MPV 110 Electronic Editing 1 at the Academy of Art University in 1997. I cut this mashup video on a Sony RM-450 controller with two S-VHS decks. These days everyone is used to “nonlinear“ video editing. Basically, it’s easy to place shots anywhere on your timeline. But with “linear“ electronic editing (using two video cassette decks) you have to think 4 to 5 shots ahead before you lay it down in a sequence. If you make a mistake, you have to cut over everything from the point you need to make an editing correction! (It’s like writing a book report on a typewriter instead of Microsoft Word.) This was my first ever editing project in art school. We had to practice editing in regards to rhythm, continuity, screen direction, and style. You can view my current work on my website. I also wrote and directed a feature film called Minty: The Assassin
