What if Rapunzel was Animated in 2D? This is one of the first personal animations I’ve done in a long time, it is a tied-down rough 2D animation of Rapunzel from ’Tangled’ voiced by Mandy Moore using edited dialogue from ’This is Us’ animated and coloured in TVPaint. I started my roughs in an animation workshop run by Cartoon Saloon in late 2019 during production of ’Wolfwalkers’ for clean/assistant animators to train for the rough animation department. We were tasked with choosing a well-known character and animating about 5-10 seconds of them with dialogue to push our animation skills. I chose Rapunzel from Tangled as I love the original 2D designs and it was an interesting challenge to me to take a 3D character and translate that to 2D. I picked dialogue by Mandy Moore that wasn’t attached to Rapunzel in Tangled as I think it’s a great way to explore a character without any connection to existing scenes from the film.
