A Canadian volunteer in Ukraine: part one - why I went, and the shock of arrival

Go to for breaking news on the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Try it out or subscribe through my link before July 31 for 30% off unlimited access, minimising propaganda and media bias. This is the first of a series of interviews with Brandon Mitchell, a Canadian-born man who has lived in Britain and Sweden, and has travelled the world. He volunteered to help the Ukrainians against the Russian invasion, and tell us his story. In this fist interview, he deals mainly with why he went, which of necessity includes a summary of his life, and then he relates the complicated procedure, fraught with uncertainties, of leaving his old life, getting to Ukraine during a pandemic, finding the right people there, and making himself useful.
